Abstract

Socrates as a judge in Plato’s Timaeus

In the Timaeus Socrates seems to have a minor role in comparison with other dialogues, where he is in the main focus. But a closer analysis of the frame conversation which introduces Timaeus’ account shows the importance of Socrates’ role, which resembles the one of the krites who chooses the themes and sets the standards for the poets.
