Abstract

Narrative structures and myth in the films on the classical past.

This article aims at understanding the great public acclaim for films setin a cinematic interpretation of the classical past, despite the low considerationcritics had for this movies. The author investigates the origins of these films and traces back their genesis in historical fiction in literatureand in academic painting with classical subjects.Finally, the author discusses how decisive has been – and still is – theuse of myths for the construction of a successful story set in the past.
