Vincenzo Tandoi e la tarda latinità

Franca Ela Consolino

Abstract

Vincenzo Tandoi and late Latinity.
The article takes into examination the part of Tandoi’s scientific production dedicated to late Latin and Medieval literature. The analysis focuses on the characteristics of Tandoi’s approach to texts, showing how in his research the discussion of textual problems always involves a wider reconstruction of the literary, cultural and historic contexts to which the texts discussed belong. Special attention is paid to his works on the iudicium coci et pistoris (AL 199 R= 190 S.B.); on an ekphrastic epigram by Luxurius (AL371 =366 SB); on the detection of a possible fragment of Lucan’s De incendio urbis in Tert. Apol. 25.8; on the first, anonymous Latin translation of Athanasius’ Vita Antonii; on the contributions to Corippus’ Iohannis; on the Geta by Vitalis of Blois and finally on the Lidia by Arnulfus of Orléans. From all these contributions, which can be considered as representative of Tandoi’s method of investigation, emerge an amazingly extended knowledge of Latin literary production, going from the origins to the Middle Ages, an acute perception of cultural and historical problems, a great attention to the nuances of language and style. Last but not least, it is shown how Tandoi’s scientific achievements have influenced the following research.
