Abstract

The tribute to the winner. On the relief with desultores in the MuséeRoyal of Mariemont (Belgium)
A fragment of one of the Roman reliefs of the Royal Museum of Mariemont(Belgium) is traditionally famous for the representation of a manumissiovindicta. This paper, based on the interpretation of the main charactersas desultores and Renaissance drawings, proposes to recognize inthe scene the tribute of two athletes to the winner of a circus competition.
