Abstract

Quandoque boni dormitant primores: about the equivocal use
of public inscriptions

Sometimes public and also official inscriptions could have improper
use or equivocal purposes because of different reasons.
Three examples are here proposed: a honorary inscription in Comum was dedicated too hastily to emperor Tiberius and it was destroyed as incorrect; a bronze plate in Munigua (Baetica) misreads a fine of emperor Titus as an occasion of honourable regard; in the double inscription on the arch of Medinaceli (Tarraconensis) two later emperors turn a city homage to Augustus into a means of own regional propaganda.
