Abstract

This article proposes an analysis of a few literary structures of Philostratus' Vitae Sophistarum. As a matter of fact, these structures appropriately express the perception of an important change in the relation between the Roman power and the Greek sophists. New intellectual figures begin to play a role at Rome and the influence of previous sophists starts to fade out. Finally, the author carefully investigates the strategies of inclusion and exclusion adopted by Philostratus in the selection of his vitae.
