Abstract

Through a comparative analysis of Ps.-Aelius Promotus, Aetius of Amida, and Philumenus in their respective chapters on venomous animals (theriaka), this paper argues that the περὶ τῶν ἰοβόλων θηρίων καὶ δηλητηρίων φαρμάκων, falsely attributed to Aelius Promotus, could not have served as a source for Aetius in the compilation of his theriaka in Libri medicinales XIII. Rather, the evidence suggests that Aetius was more directly reliant on Philumenus' De venenatis animalibus for this subject matter.
